CII progressing on all fronts
Interview

Insurance Newslink dropped into the Chartered Insurance Institute’s (CII) new Lombard Street office to meet up with Sian Fisher, ceo, to review progress since our last interview.
Ms Fisher emphasised the need for relevant learning and outlined how the CII’s modernisation journey was providing better contact with the customer, self-service and digitisation, and taking the fear out of the use of Artificial Intelligence.
The CII continues to be the leader in pursuing diversification with an emphasis on women’s financial futures, whether customers or employees. It revealed measures that would be undertaken by the insurance profession as part of the Insuring Women’s Futures initiative at the end of 2019. The initiative has now gained support of major market players including AIG, AXA, Scottish Widows, Swiss Re and Zurich along with the LMA, which has committed to offer flexible working and inclusive practices for all colleagues.
Other major developments have been the launch of the Society of Claims Professionals and the Society of Underwriting, following on from the launch of the Society of Insurance Broking. All of the Societies are committed to publishing good practice guides on subjects such as cyber cover, fraud, and subsidence claims, and the Society of Insurance Broking also highlighted that knowing your customer and gaining their trust is more important than ever, emphasising the CII tagline ”Standards, Professionalism, Trust”.
A CII Public Trust Survey indicated that UK consumers want action on loyalty, while the Personal Finance Society supported the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) looking at ways to better engage consumers in financial planning.
On professionalism, the CII relaunched its corporate Chartered proposition in May and followed up in November with a web and social media advertising campaign to explain what Chartered status means to customers. The New Generation Group also continues to flourish.
Ms Fisher said that Internationalisation would be a key theme for 2020. The appointment of an International Director took place a year ago, as did the opening of a new office in the UAE to cover the Middle East and Africa under the leadership of a new Regional Director. There was also a new Regional Director appointed for the Asia Pacific region. An impressive CII publication titled “A World of Risk: Building a Trusted International Insurance Profession” was released.
The report contains a number of excellent relevant articles and details of all 38 international CII affiliated institutes. It is a recommended read indicating how important a global perspective is in this fast-changing world.
The CII with Ms Fisher at the helm is continuing the dynamic momentum springing from the launch of its Strategic Manifesto 2021 Road Map in 2016.
